Why Are Maternal, Infant, and Child Health Important? Maternal Health Maternal health is the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. For many women, motherhood is a rewarding experience. For others it is a time of ill health and sometimes even death. Maternal and child health is an important public health issue because: * we have the opportunity to end preventable deaths among all women, children and adolescents and to greatly improve their health and well-being. Maternal morbidity includes physical and psychologic conditions that result from or are aggravated by pregnancy and have an adverse effect on a woman’s health. The most severe complications of pregnancy, generally referred to as severe maternal morbidity (SMM), affect more than 50,000 women in the United States every year.
